Before you fill out a car loan application, you might want to check out the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s annual list of Top Safety Picks.

For many years, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a non-profit organization funded by auto insurance companies, has worked hard to reduce road accidents and injuries by conducting thorough research on popular passenger vehicles as well as consumer products like child booster seats. Every year the organization performs three tests to determine the Top Safety Picks: Frontal offset impact test, side impact test, rear crash protection and head restraint ratings, and a roof strength test.

According to Elizabeth Fairchild who writes for the Money Blog on Personal Money Store, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named six vehicles made by Ford Top Safety Picks this year:

  • Chrysler Sebring 4-door with electronic stability control
  • Dodge Avenger with electronic stability control
  • Dodge Journey
  • Jeep Patriot with side torso air bags

Of course, as many of you probably know, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has come under scrutiny several times before, accused of seeking the best interests of Insurance companies rather than the public. They Institute has been criticized for being too hard on certain vehicle types, particularly motorcycles. But let’s be real. Everyone can agree that despite how cool or blazing they can be, motorcycles are definitely not the safest ride out there.
