There are two types of keywords you can target: short-tail keywords and longtail keywords. Short-tail keywords are short and easy to remember, and they are generally harder to rank high for because of heavy traffic and high competition. However, because of the high volume of competition on this keyword term, your chances of quickly getting on the first page are not great, and it does involve some work. You can’t just write one or two articles and expect to show up on the first list of search results. You are going to have to build a catalog of articles that promote your targeted keyword or keyword phrase, with strong banklinks, internally and externally.

Ranking high for short-tail keywords can take up a lot of time and effort, but it is possible. However, it doesn’t have to be a hectic deed, especially if you aim your efforts at ranking high for low-competitive longtail keywords. So instead of having to go through all the hard word of ranking number one for “wedding ideas,” why not target several longtail keywords related to your product/service, like “wedding reception decoration ideas” and “wedding ideas on a budget.” Ranking high for these longtail keywords can not only guarantee you a respectable ranking on the Web, but it can also be the ultimate source of your success.
